The Site

The EPA HQ is currently located at 1067 Pacific Street in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY.

History

Since the early part of the 20th century until the 1960s, the current site of the EPA was primarily residential, consisting of wooden frame 2-3 story homes and brick apartment buildings. After a rezoning ordinance took effect in 1961, the area surrounding Atlantic Avenue along the Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant border became home to a range of auto repair shops and industrial activities. The deed for the site changed hands over the following decades, eventually owned and operated as an auto repair shop by Frank Marotto.

Current

Over the past 4.5 years, (2013-2017) the site has been re-imagined as 1067 PacificPeople, a movement-based project that focuses on the relationship between people and urban wild plants often-called weeds. It focuses on social justice and community, and moves between the borders of “live-performance,” “arts,” “politics” and “life.” In the winter of 2017, participants and organizers at 1067 PacificPeople began to develop a new project — the Environmental Performance Agency, a platform for for new ways of thinking about NYC’s urban ecologies, plant-human relationships, and to advocate for the agency of all living performers co-creating our environment, native or migrant.
